The safety of workers is the primary concern in project freeze.
The U.S. government has been working to consolidate and quarantine nuclear waste from Cold War research efforts in a remote underground facility in New Mexico. Now, in an effort to create “social distance” for the employees involved in the consolidation, the Nuclear Waste Partnership announced that they would be halting the cleanup.
“This action is being taken out of an abundance of caution for the safety of employees and the community,” said spokesman Donavan Mager.
Some very essential tasks are being kept up, such as keeping up the structural integrity of the natural cavern the waste is held in.
